On what the U.S. President Donald Trump has dubbed "Liberation Day," he announced a universal "baseline" 10% tariff on all imports into the U.S., with different countries facing even higher tariffs. In an interview with SFC, Bala Ramasamy, Professor of Economics at CEIBS, questioned the effectiveness of bringing manufacturing back to the U.S. through tariffs. He explained that certain industries are not suited for the U.S., and high-end manufacturing would not create the type of jobs needed for many workers. Ramasamy expressed doubt that the tariffs would benefit the U.S. long-term, calling the trade war a costly and potentially painful mistake.
